Είναι ένας DNA ιός ο οποίος μεταδίδεται μέσω σταγονιδίων από το αναπνευστικό σύστημα από άνθρωπο σε άνθρωπο. Έχει περίοδο επώασης 4-20 ημέρες .

Πρωτολοίμωξη στην κύηση συμβαίνει σε λιγότερο από 1% των γυναικών.

Ο ιός PARVO B19 είναι ο αιτιολογικός παράγοντας του λοιµώδους ερυθήµατος, που είναι γνωστό και ως 5η νόσος. Άλλες νοσολογικές οντότητες που έχουν συνδεθεί µε λοίµωξη από ιό PARVO B19 είναι πολυαρθροπάθεια, χρόνια αναιµία σε ανοσοκατασταλµένους ασθενείς και θροµβοπενία. Ο κίνδυνος κάθετης µετάδοσης υπολογίζεται σε 16%-33% ανάλογα µε την ηλικία κύησης.

Κλινική εικόνα.

Ο ιός προκαλεί καταστροφή των ερυθροβλαστών στο έµβρυο, µε αποτέλεσµα ενδοµήτριο θάνατο (3-9%) και µη άνοσο εµβρυϊκό ύδρωπα (18%). Σοβαρή νόσος του κυήµατος προκαλείται αν προσβληθεί πριν την 29η εβδοµάδα της κύησης.

Αντιµετώπιση.

Αν η µητέρα παρουσιάσει ύποπτη κλινική εικόνα υποβάλλεται σε ειδικό ορολογικό έλεγχο και, αν είναι παθολογικός, το έµβρυο παρακολουθείται υπερηχογραφικά. Αν εµφανιστεί εµβρυϊκός ύδρωπας, η διόρθωση της αναιµίας µε ενδοµήτρια µετάγγιση βελτιώνει την έκβαση της κύησης.
